Bellong Bellong Now is an art and cultural festival, organized by a group of young international creators to explore a sustainable future for Korea's Jeju Island.

"Bellong Bellong" means "Twingkle Twinkle" in Jeju dialect, and we focus on four contemporary themes relating to sustainability that concern Jeju today: The Environment, Heritage, Ecology of Art and Culture, and Education (the Next Generation)

From Jeju to Jeju

This project focuses on how the problem of waste can be addressed in Jeju from an artistic perspective. Jeju is confronting a serious issue of waste, as its population and the number of visitors have increased dramatically in the past few years. Also, it has to dispose of a large volume of ocean waste that arrives from other countries nearby. Using rubbish found on the shore, artist Yangkura and architect Maria Glionna will create a mobile building which will be used for a performance. Afterwards, it will be presented for public display for a limited period.

Tamlarok ‘Remembering the Jeju Dialect’

The artist in this exhibition is Yeni Kim, an illustrator and designer based in Seoul and London, who has created art works that interpret and visualize the Jeju dialect through workshops. In this artwork, she has tried to record the Jeju dialect in the form of art to help us all remember this disappearing language and pass it onto the next generation. She worked with a Jeju dialect expert and haenyeo (female divers) to collect regional expressions; the work will be shared with children from Seonheul branch of Hamduk Elementary School in Jeju.

Yin & Yang Pyungdaeri

Woody Kim has interviewed residents around Pyungdaeri to find out stories and philosophy behind them. Based on these stories, Woody Kim has created new interpretations. These new narratives will be interwoven into a work of art. This work then will be installed in a once-abandoned house of Pyungdaeri, with lightings. The memory of people of Pyungdaeri are connected into light and art, and will brighten the home.
